David Wesley Hall married Lydia Luella Catlett (LuluBelle) on July 4, 1895 in Curtis, NE. A year later they had a son, Charles Raymond Hall, born on July 2, 1896.

Family lore is that Lydia divorced David soon after Charlie was born.

David Wesley Hall's next wife was Eleanor Josephine Gyles. They had their first child on April 15, 1897, and were married five months later on Sep 30, 1897.

The fact that their first child was born nine months and 12 days after the birth of his child with LuluBelle may have had something to do with the divorce.

David W Hall and Eleanor had nine children together, their last in Oklahoma in 1915. Together they lived in Scotts Bluff, NE, Washita County, Oklahoma, and Custer County,

Oklahoma.

Charles Raymond Hall was born July 2, 1896 in Wallace, NE.   He married Jamie Elizabeth House on May 23, 1914 in Kansas City, MO and they had 3 children:

     1. Charles Raymond Hall, Jr., Nov. 3, 1914

     2. Janie Louise Hall Catlett, April 6, 1918.

     3. Lulu Grace Hall Hilliard, June 20, 1920.

Unfortunately, Jamie Elizabeth died September 30, 1921, and was buried in the Forrest Hill Cemetery in Kansas City.

Charlie then married Adabelle Claire Davis on September 27, 1922, and they had 4 children:

1. Gleen Warren Hall, October 22, 1923, Kansas City, MO

2. Everett Gregory Hall, April 18, 1926, Eugene, Oregon

3. Elton Ross Hall, November 07, 1928, Eugene, Oregon

4. Rosemary Joy Hall, May 13, 1931, Eugene, Oregon

Unfortunately, Charlie turned out to be something of a scoundrel when it came to women. He left his wife, AdaBelle, when their daughter, Rosemary, was only a few weeks old and ran off with his best friend’s wife.

Adabelle wanted to adopt all 3 of Charlie's children from his first marriage but Charlie wouldn't allow that and gave away his 2 daughters.  Adabelle did raise Raymond, along with her own children with Charlie.

He was reported to be a very charming man, what might be called a "man's man" and he loved charming the women. He also had his mother's gift for sales and worked as a traveling salesman. (He was listed in the 1930 census as an Insurance Salesman and at his death as an advertising salesman.) But his charm and salesmanship could also get him into trouble and he ended up being shot dead when he was found in bed with a sheriff’s wife. This was in Phoenix, Arizona, on 11 March 1940. He was buried on 14 March 1940 at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Phoenix. The death certificate lists the cause of death as "heart failure".

4. Rosemary Joy Hall, May 13, 1931, Eugene, Oregon.

Adabelle wanted to adopt all 3 of Charlie's children from his first marriage. Charlie wouldn't allow that and gave away his 2 daughters and tried to find a home for his son, Raymond. But Adabelle did raise Raymond, along with her own children she had with Charlie.

Notes for CHARLES RAYMOND HALL:

Nickname "Charlie". According to Aunt Earlene Hall, Charlie was shot and killed by a sheriff when he found Charlie in bed with his wife. Uncle Ray and Aunt Earlene were called to identify the body and were told to leave town without asking questions. The official death record states he died from a heart attack. Charlie was known for being a cad and walked out on Ada for another woman, leaving Ada to raise their 3 children and his son, Charles Raymond (Ray), alone.

I have received a copy of his death certificate. He died in Phoenix, Arizona on March 11, 1940 at the age of 42 years, 8 months, 9 days old. It states the cause of death as "Coronary Thrombosis". He is listed as a "Adv. Salesman". The informant for the information on this death certificate was Charles Raymond Hall of El Paso, Texas. Charlie was buried on March 14, 1940 at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Phoenix, Arizona. This certificate of death was State File No. 186, registered No. 380.

Notes for CHARLES RAYMOND HALL:

According to an email Aunt Earlene sent out on October 22, 2001 (to inform everyone that Louise's husband, Chet, had died), "Ray" was passed around right after his mother died. He was given to Charlie's mother, Lydia, but she died suddenly. Then he was given to Janie's parents, but they didn't keep him. Then he was given to one of Janie's sisters, but the sister died due to her husband hitting her with a skillet (she was pregnant at the time). Aunt Earlene then said " no wonder he was even more of a mess than a spoiled little boy".

The Westward Migration

David Wesley Hall and John Martin Irwin Hall, continued their westward migration together to Scotts Bluff, Nebraska.

They arrived there before 1908 and farmed and had children until 1912. Then the John Martin Hall family moved on to Palisade, Colorado, and the David Wesley Hall family moved on to Washita, Oklahoma.

We will discuss each family separately

John Martin Irwin Hall married Theresa Josephine Weil in Curtis, NE, on Sep 20, 1898. Their first child, Ramel Tessora Hall, was born on Jan 19, 1900. The 1900 US Census shows them to be living in Laws Precinct of Frontier County. His occupation is a Farmer and they live on a rented farm. Two more children were born in Curtis, but died very young.

They then moved to Scotts Bluff, NE, arriving before 1908. John Garth Hall and Russell Weil Hall were born there.

The 1910 US Census shows them to be living on a farm in Dewey, Scotts Bluff, NE. He is a Farmer working on his own farm.

His brother, David Wesley Hall, is shown 25 miles west in Kiowa, Scotts Bluff County, with his wife, Eleanor, and children. He is also a Farmer working on his own farm.

On the same page is listed Wesley Lackey and his wife, Hattie L. Weil, who is Theresa's younger sister. Living with them is her mother, Annie Elizabeth Jones, and Hattie's brothers Karl D. Weil. Bernard F. Weil is also a Farmer working on his own farm.

Shortly after that the family moved to Palisade, Colorado, where Marjorie Elizabeth Hall was born Dec 7, 1913.

The 1920 US Census shows John Hall, his wife Theresa, and six children: Ramel, Garth, Russell, Marjorie, Irma, and Clarice all living in Palisade in a home they owned but which was mortgaged. His occupation is listed as an automobile salesman. Ramel is listed as a saleslady in a department store.

The 1930 US Census shows the family to be living in Grand Junction including John, Garth, Russell, Marjorie, and Irma. Theresa had died the previous February. They were living in a rented home ($25/month) and he is listed as a used car salesman. The same schedule shows James Bell along with his wife, Ramel, and Johnie, Leroy, and Shirley. They live in their own home which is worth $2500. He is listed as a Manager in a chain store meat market.

This pretty much ends the Westward Migration. The last major family moves to Colorado and Oklahoma were completed between 1912 and 1915. This means they were accomplished with horses, buggies, wagons, and lots of walking. The trip over the continental divide must have been especially hard.

The next generation (Us) has spread all over the country and world. But we've used planes, trains, and automobiles. And when we farmed we had trucks and tractors.
